As a technical textile specialist and a Chartered Fellow of the Textile Institute (CText FTI), I focus on designing and developing functional apparel and high-performance textiles. My research covers a broad scope for product development and evaluation, particularly technical textiles. I have been at the forefront of pioneering bio-functional finishing techniques for fabrics, specifically achieving antimicrobial properties through using plant-based nano-emulsions and creating self-sanitising face coverings.

Additionally, I have led innovative projects, including designing and developing socks engineered to measure shear force, producing biopolymers (alginate) sourced from renewable materials, and an environmentally friendly approach to denim fading and patterning using CO2 lasers. My work also investigates the potential of Ugandan bark cloth as a sustainable fashion textile and its applications in healthcare. I am interested in pressure measurement devices for classifying sports compression hosiery and designing padded clothing for rugby using auxetic materials.

As a Senior Lecturer, I teach product design and development to undergraduate and postgraduate students across various academic units. However, my involvement goes beyond the classroom; I am deeply committed to mentoring research students embarking on their MPhil, PhD, and MSc projects at MMU. I have a proven track record of working on externally funded projects, industry-funded KTPs, consulting projects and successful supervision, having guided five PhD students and four Master by Research candidates as the primary supervisor. Currently, I am supervising two PhD students.

In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I contribute to the Manchester Fashion Institute as a Doctoral College Department Lead (DCDL). I am dedicated to supporting new postgraduate applicants in crafting their research proposals and assembling appropriate supervisory teams while actively recruiting local and international candidates. I also engage with the academic community as a reviewer for numerous scholarly journals, research funding projects, and book publications. My leadership experience includes serving as Programme Leader for BSc Fashion Materials and Technology from 2012 to 2015, Research Cluster Leader for Innovative Materials and Product Development from 2015 to 2019, and Admissions Tutor and Coordinator from November 2020 to May 2021.

Ugandan Barkcloth project

An interdisciplinary research team from the Manchester Fashion Institute (MFI) from Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Manchester Met. University, [MMU] and Istituto Marangoni, London, has evaluated performance and the use of Ugandan bark cloth recognised by UNESCO.

This research investigated bark cloth’s potential as an eco-fashion fabric and addresses some of the practical as well as aesthetic - garment making considerations. The project was supported with the internal QR funding from the research cluster at MFI via MSARC (Manchester School of Art Research Centre) for conference dissemination.
