Abstract

The Challenge of Taking Fibre out of the Domestic Waste Stream for a Major Urban Conurbation – A Case Study of Greater Manchester.

The Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority has a waste management strategy and policies that seek to maximise opportunities for waste segregation, for diversion from landfill, for reducing carbon emissions and for delivering social return on investment (creating waste from wealth). Approximately 10 % or 66,000 tonnes of textiles enter the Greater Manchester Waste Stream every year costing GMWDA c£5 million to process. This presentation with explain the particular challenges of taking textiles out of the waste stream and the approach being taken in Greater Manchester to overcome them, simultaneously cutting costs and developing more sustainable services.
