My final project is titled 'Asexuality Awareness' and is produced in accordance with the Teen Vogue brand image and content style. It was heavily influenced by documentary films and young queer artists, film-makers and photographers, such as Harley Weir, Andrew Thomas Huang and Matt Lambert. Like sexuality, asexuality is a large spectrum, but unfortunately one that not many people know much about.
Due to a lack of research and representation of asexuality in academia and the media, asexual people are often wrongly interpreted as traumatised, boring, shy and lifeless, or they are more commonly just completely ignored. The film intends to help break that stigma. This work is important to me because representation of misunderstood people in the media has incredible positive impact. Asexuality is a topic I wanted to raise because there is already lots of healthy conversation about sex, and not all that much that normalises a lack of it.
I feel that producing a short, light-hearted and informative documentary about an asexual person's experience is the perfect way to contribute to a generation of growing activists' knowledge and awareness, like the Teen Vogue audience.
