Fashion Buying and Merchandising BA (Hons)
“THE TUTORS ON THIS COURSE ARE AMAZING AND ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO GIVE AS MUCH SUPPORT AS REQUIRED. IT WAS IMPORTANT TO ME THAT ALL THE LECTURERS HAVE WORKED WITHIN THE INDUSTRY THEREFORE EVERYTHING WAS RELEVANT AND BUSINESS FOCUSED.”
The course
Studying at Manchester Met was an obvious choice when considering degree courses as it has a great reputation for fashion courses, and I always knew this was the direction I wanted to pursue. I chose to study Fashion Buying and Merchandising after attending an Open Day where I discovered that I could develop academically whilst following my interest in fashion.
Industry placement
In my third year, I secured a yearlong placement at Boots Head Office in Nottingham as Operations Marketing Assistant. I worked as part of the Loyalty department to deliver the Advantage Card service as effectively as possible.
The main project I worked on was the launch of the Boots app. This consisted of extensive testing of the app, and creating a training programme for over 36,000 staff. I also worked on email campaigns with brands such as Dove and Soap & Glory, communicating with external agencies and management daily.
On placement, I developed transferrable skills that I have been able to apply to my final year and will take forward into my future career. My communication and presentation skills improved as I had to regularly present to the team and negotiate with suppliers – this made me become more confident in my ability. Completing a placement really was invaluable, I would highly recommend it.
Student support
The tutors on this course are amazing and are always available to give as much support as required. It was important to me that all the lecturers have worked within the industry.
I also had the opportunity to travel with educational trips to Istanbul and Shanghai. These trips gave me the opportunity to put what I had learned into context.
After graduation
I was fortunate to be offered two roles before I had finished my final year studies. After a lot of thought I have decided to take the Graduate role at Arcadia as a Buying Admin Assistant.
