MA Fashion Buying and Merchandising Management

"Studying for my postgraduate degree is the best decision I ever made"

The Course:

I chose to study at Manchester Fashion Institute as it had the course that I’ve always wanted to study. After much research, I realized that Manchester Fashion Institute was one of the only universities that offered this type of course at Masters level, plus the facilities were fantastic and industry standard.

My postgraduate course has been so different in comparison to my undergraduate degree. It has definitely been a challenge but it has also been the most rewarding experience of my life. When I applied I didn’t expect to find it a challenge, but I wouldn’t change it for the world! I have learned so much in the short time I have been studying and I am certain it will be extremely beneficial for my career. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

I truly enjoyed every unit that we have done so far and learned so much. My favourite project so far would probably have to be the range plan I did between a well-known brand and an upcoming designer in the fashion industry. It was a really tough project for me as it was my first time doing menswear, but I am truly glad that I decided to do so since I had the ability to learn a lot. I really pushed the boundaries and felt like it was a perfect opportunity to learn something new.

Industry Employment:

Studying for my MA Fashion Buying and Merchandising Management degree at Manchester Fashion Institute has opened many doors to me in terms of employment. I had the opportunity to apply for a new, exclusive role of personal stylist at the new Marks and Spencer ‘Fit and Style’ studio in Manchester City Centre, which was offered solely to Fashion Institute students. I was one of the lucky students to get the job. It is the perfect opportunity to put into practice what I’ve also been learning during the course and it helps me to get a better understanding of how the industry works. I am combining the knowledge that I get at the course with the part-time job and it is a perfect mixture to learn something new every day.

I have also become an International Student Ambassador for Manchester Fashion Institute, which is another great opportunity to get in touch with international students and try to help them in any way I can whilst they are starting their life in Manchester. It will be an amazing experience to share all these opportunities with them and explain how much I was able to learn at MFI.

Student Support:

I’d particularly like to mention that all the staff has been very helpful in every possible way. Whether it’s through an email or taking their time to see students face to face, I truly appreciate the fact that they make students feel important and support their creative ideas. I never felt like I was just a number to them, but rather an individual that they see potential in and that makes me truly value this whole experience a lot more than expected.

I really enjoy the relationship that is established between students and professors, it’s much more personal than when studying at undergraduate level, and it goes beyond what I expected. The tutors always appreciate our ideas and push us to think outside of the box.

The City:

I love the city, Manchester is so unique. It’s so multicultural and diverse and there is such a mix of different people I was able to feel at home really quickly.

Top Tip for International Students

To anyone that may have doubts about this big step, I’d say to just go for it. As an international student that moved alone into another country, it is the best choice I’ve ever made! There are so many opportunities that prospective students may get, and it truly feels amazing knowing that the staff are so supportive in every step of the way. I’d like to say especially to potential international students to not be afraid, as Manchester Fashion Institute will give you the knowledge and industry insight that will help you achieve your goals and help you get prepared for a career in the industry.
