Jayne Mechan
Senior Lecturer, Fashion Technology
I am a Senior Lecturer in Fashion Technology within the Manchester Fashion Institute.
My main focus of teaching is with BA(Hons) Fashion Design Technology - Womenswear, Menswear & Sportswear pathways. I support students to problem solve creatively and specialise in the communication of products and technical processes using 2D and 3D multimedia methods. I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Currently year manager responsible for the pastoral care of final year students across for all three pathways.
I guest lecture on other undergraduate and post graduate programmes within the university including PrintCity (https://printcity.mmu.ac.uk/).
Prior to joining MMU I worked in the fashion industry for a number of years, initially in design and product development for womenswear and childrenswear. My interest in technologies led me to Director of Professional Services within a global IT for Fashion Solutions company. The focus on creative digital solutions across the apparel supply chain and market levels included the implementation of Avatar and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) Systems. My role took me across Europe, Asia and the USA. In 2007 I took up a position as a full time Senior Lecturer in Fashion Technology at MMU.
Whilst at the university I have gained an MSc in Clothing Product Development, PGCert in Academic Practice and FHEA. In 2019 I commenced a part time PhD on the topic of Artificial Female Bodies As An Intervention, studying across two faculties; Manchester Fashion Institute and the Department of Computing & Mathematics.
I work on bespoke projects with industry, working as part of the team with the Head of Business Engagement (Barbara Shepherd) .
I champion 3D digital approaches within Fashion Design and Technology. I am a member of the Digital Education Champions team launched in 2020.
I hold a patent for a textile based product for babies and have previously co-chaired the Manchester Inventors Group.

Research Interests
Research interests focus on dynamic processes within fashion design and product development. Current investigations include techniques for gathering and presenting information about human bodies in 2D and 3D. By exploring the use of digital and non-digital methods, I aim to address critical issues relating to how and why bodies are presented and represented through fashion.
I am particularly interested in practices inclusivity, of diversity, difference, change and transformation, transition, construction and reconstruction. I advocate positive body image.
My current practice based PhD is on the topic of:
Artificial female bodies as an intervention for contemporary body experiences.
Within my work and research I use a range of digital and avatar technologies including tools to represent the body; 3D body scanners, CLO3D, Gerber3D, VStitcher, Virtual Alvaforms. 3D printing processes and outputs using Fusion360 are of interest, as is the use of VR and AR to work ‘phygitally’ (hybrid physical and digital practices).
Academic collaborations
(209) Science and Industry Museum Public Engagment event - Avatar Me! workshop where visitors experienced body scanning, becoming an avatar and customising their avatar and a digital tshirt in 3D.
(2018-2019) TRANS travelling exhibition as part of IFFTI (International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes). TRANSfiguring the female form. An installation re-presenting the body explored through a longitudinal study of 3D body scans of one female torso, presented using 2D CAD and 3D printing. First exhibition at Bunka in Tokyo (2018), and Manchester Fashion Institute (2019).
(2017-2019) Currently part of a cross disciplinary team on a £50k innovation funded Starworks Devices for Dignity project. The project is working with NHS National Institute for Health Research, prostheticians, and parents of children with congenital upper limb differences. The team presented their progress for a fashion based 3D printable Child Upper Limb 3D Printable Prosthetic, I developed new methods to help parents and children become familiar with the 3D printed limb options using fashion as an underlying process.
