I am highly committed to empowering learners to excel, irrespective of ability and background. I am individual with the ability to communicate effectively who enjoys working collaboratively with the aptitude to embrace change as well as new opportunities and challenges within a proactive manner. I am comfortable to teach in a series of areas relating to fashion and business disciplines and strive to teach in a manner which instils excellence in funny and informal manner.

Academic and professional qualifications

Having worked in a series of environments in fashion and finance (Jaeger, NTL, KD Grammar School, ATL), I started working within the university on a multi-million pound project within the Manchester Fashion Institute, which was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The project was envisaged to help stimulate growth within the fashion and apparel industry in the North West of England. Within the project I undertook series of duties simultaneously which included providing consultancy on basic business management and health and safety legislation to small and medium sized business enterprises. The role I performed as the ‘Financial Officer’ on the project entailed scrutinising all expenditure, submitting quarterly financial reports, monitoring all targets, ensuring transparent audit trails on all businesses and adhering to procedures akin to stringent European directives which were updated constantly.

As well as the ERDF duties I performed within the department, I also undertook a series of additional responsibilities, which included being the initial point of contact for all project work, managing the administration and finance of short courses for our industrial collaborators as well as assisting students/staff in all aspects of industrial placements and SME’s on Office set-up  and Health and Safety issues.

The cessation of the project resulted in the opportunity to work with students on industrial placements on a greater scale and to teach undergraduates in series of areas, which included financial management, statistical analysis and fashion business management. I found teaching to be an extremely rewarding career and subsequently began to teach on a full-time basis and pursued an Post Graduate and Masters qualification in the area ‘Academic Practice’ which has resulted in actively seeking new ways in which to modify my practice in order to make it more enriching for my students.

Previous Employment

As the registrar I would scrutinise all entry examination papers, register students to undertake GCSE examinations and ensure the compliance of standards were akin to all government and education authority procedures.

Graduate Recruitment Programme (Managerial Stream) - NTL
Jan 2000 – Jan 2001
Originally employed as graduate trainee the merger from Cable and Wireless with NTL led to me to work in a series of departments which included the ‘inbound call team’ ‘the outbound team’ and then within ‘digital despatch’ these roles required me to use a series of systems simultaneously in order to provide technical support for various stakeholders and to gain an insight in to the myriad of managerial activities within NTL, in an attempt to uncover areas of good practice and create some unity and parity between systems and other internal departments.

Assistant Visual Merchandiser and Weekend Manager - Jaeger
Sep 1998 – Jan 2000
In this position I was in charge of all menswear apparel, sales and merchandising. This position required me to undertake regular training in Jaegers head office in Broadwick Street (London) as well as all general retail duties and was beneficial as it enabled me to experiment with the merchandising of mens apparel and develop the managerial competence to be in charge of all activities on weekends and in cases of managerial absences.

Research

Research Interests

Within my postgraduate qualification, my focus was on areas of student engagement and attendance in an attempt to develop a strategy that could serve to enhance student learning within the MMU. The key issues uncovered related to how individualisation in terms of massive student numbers in the confines of a more business orientated environment is having a dynamic impact on the role of the academic, student and indeed the University. Within my Master’s dissertation the focus of my research enquiry was on how instrumental an academic could be on facilitating student attendance.
