Megan Hughes BA (Hons) Fashion
I am a womenswear designer who takes pride in creating bold silhouettes through creative cut. My collection MAKE IT WET challenges the fine line between beauty and grotesque, using insects, octopuses, and gross imagery as inspiration. Materiality plays a huge role in my collection, using latex and shiny ripstops allows me to create captivating garments that looked wet to touch. Fashion demands innovative thinkers. What better way to create something new and questionable than challenging societies biggest fears and then making it look sexy? After becoming fascinated with the octopus and studying the circular texture form of an octopus it led me into the study of tropophobia. This influenced my design work heavily, which led to the combination of the circular pattern cutting and wet looking materials, leaving an unsettling tone to my work. I wanted to create an army of modern Medusas. The myth of medusa is still relevant today, highlighting issues of sexual assault and treatment of women. It is important to realise whilst she is known for her beauty, she is most importantly known for being a monster which is why I wanted to bring out the beauty in the grotesque creatures. Materiality plays a huge role in my collection, using latex and ripstop allowed me to creative interesting garments that looked wet to touch.
