Festival Fanatics

My final collection for BA (Hons) Fashion is designed to be funky festival-wear, with colour and print being my main focus. My inspiration comes from festival culture, carnivals and circus tents. After researching the Dior Spring Summer 2021 Haute Couture collection, which was centred around the Visconti-Sforza tarot deck, I researched other tarot decks and used them as prints in my own collection. The beautiful tarot imagery has been translated onto my garments using foiling techniques, garment vinyl and devoré. I chose to use silver metallic vinyl and foil, as well as sparkly embroidery threads to enhance the overall visual effect of my collection.

In addition to tarot cards, I also researched lingerie such as garter belts and corsets. These influenced the silhouette of the velvet waistbands on outfits 1 & 2 and the lace-up detailing on the back of the top for outfit 4. Both waistbands have been printed with my tarot imagery, using a technique called devoré, whereby the fibres are dissolved in a chemical process, leaving my design on the surface.

My collection is aimed at the 18-28 age group, and has been designed as womenswear. I designed my collection to be more streetwear than high-end: elegant and classy, yet playful and affordable, so that everybody can enjoy my funky festival wear.

One of the techniques used in the creation of my final collection, was a construction method whereby I overlocked individual pattern pieces together (using lycra fabric), to create the garments. For the construction of the flared trousers from outfit 4, I used 40 individual pattern pieces which I overlocked together. Another technique I used was gathering: the trousers from outfit 1 and the skirt and cropped jacket from outfit 2. The gathering on the trousers created a puffy balloon silhouette which was accentuated by the lightweight ripstop nylon fabric.
