Bayan Kong Sinilangan

I am a graduate designer focused on womenswear and is specialised in print and embroidery.

My method of developing prints involve illustrating my designs inspired from research, transforming it into specific patterns using Photoshop or Illustrator and then exploring the best outcome of the print through sampling different printing methods.

For silhouette and shape development, I enjoy doing standwork or analysing research garments.

I love being able to explore surface design and texture within my work whether it's through embellishment or being able to play around with the fabric itself.

'Bayan Kong Sinilangan' is a rough translation to 'the land where I was born'. My final collection being a homage to my Filipino childhood memories and to my cultural heritage.

I often refered to personal photographs taken from the Philippines and have developed native florals, fruit and filipino phrases into digital printed fabrics and digital embroidery. Embellishments like seashells and rosaries are reminiscent of the beaches and churches my family often visit.

These materials and chosen colours provide a summery, playful mood which can be a reflection of the fun you can experience in the Philippines. The use of ruffles also adds playfulness and is a design feature that closely relates to my feminine aesthetic and style.

Producing this collection has helped me to recollect and preserve important memories which I had once forgotten and I hope that my collection can influence others into wanting to communicate their own background and to embrace their own cultural heritage.

My fabrics were printed by Kornit Digital where I was selected as a finalist for the Kornit X GFW print competition. I've also additionally had been chosen to submit my portfolio for the Culture and Heritage GFW Portfolio Award.
