Textile Testing and Analysis

Manchester Fashion Institute’s Textile Laboratories are currently used at undergraduate level as part of the taught curriculum and by postgraduates and staff for both research projects and enterprise consultancy. This provides the key differentiator from other institutions offering fashion programmes, giving students a thorough understanding of the textile and garment performance requirements of the Textile and Clothing industry.

We also offer one-to-one advice for industry on the different types of testing available, recommend the right testing for fabrics, advice on technical adjustments needed to add real value to your fabric and end product. We have fully serviced, and calibrated equipment, and we are not accredited to any specific body to maintain our impartiality. In our laboratories, we can provide testing to a variety of standards (such as BS, ISO, EN, etc.) as well as non-standard tests, specifically tailored to our customer’s requirements

Accessible Expertise

We work with partners such as English Fine Cottons, PortWest, Canterbury, and Matalan. A variety of testing can be performed to a wide range of research and industry recognised standards, covering a broad spectrum of aesthetic and highly technical requirements. The textile labs have been involved in a number of prestigious projects, including The Use of Kymira FIR Technology in Neonatal Products, Independent School Uniform Textile Testing, Ugandan Bark cloth as craft based eco-fashion, and its potential in healthcare.

Informed Experience

We can draw from a pool of experts across the university; with academic expertise in biomechanics, sports performance and material science all working collaboratively with textile academics to innovate in the field of apparel. Examples of these include the embedding of electrical stimulus in fabrics and garments for patients with spinal injuries, the use of photochromatic inks in clothing, and textile-based knee devices for injury prevention for female athletes.
