Fashion and Textiles courses leapt 16 places from last year to take fourth spot in their national subject rankings
Fashion and art courses at Manchester Metropolitan University have been ranked among the best in the country by the 2018 Guardian University Guide.
The Guardian’s annual guide rates universities by quality of teaching, student satisfaction and employability. It also groups courses into designated subject areas and provides separate league tables for each.
The results were particularly impressive for Fashion and Textiles courses, which leapt 16 places from last year to take fourth spot in their national subject rankings. This category included eight Manchester Metropolitan courses, ranging from BA (Hons) in Fashion and BA (Hons) Textiles in Practice at Manchester School of Art, to a number of courses at Manchester Fashion Institute, including BA (Hons) Fashion Futures, BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising, and a range of BA courses in Fashion Design and Technology.
Design and Crafts courses, based at the Manchester School of Art, also retained their spot in the top 10 from last year, while Manchester Metropolitan’s Art subjects climbed to 17th, an improvement of 13 places.
Colin Renfrew, Director of Manchester Fashion Institute, said: “We are delighted to see our world-class fashion and textiles courses get this recognition, which is reward for the hard work of staff and students. Manchester Fashion Institute prides itself on bringing talent in fashion and design together from across the world to provide a platform for our students to make their mark in industry. Manchester is a thriving, creative city and we want the next generation of designers to join us here.”
Penny Macbeth, Dean of Manchester School of Art, said: “Not only am I pleased to see our Design and Crafts courses maintain their excellent position, but doubly thrilled to see that our Art courses have soared up the rankings. We foster a unique, cross-disciplinary creative environment at the Manchester School of Art which has propelled our graduates to be artists and designers of great renown.”
