Woman Up vol.01 Photography by Ella Kenneally A printed and digital publication exploring the world of Women and Sports, particularly male dominated sports. A collection of photos, stories and interviews focusing on sportswomen and female fan culture across Manchester. I want to explore people’s experiences as a female athlete in Northern England; how these women are challenging gender roles and stereotypes and what it means to be a woman in the world of sport today. Woman Up vol.02 Photography, creative direction and styling by Ella Kenneally Woman Up vol.02 is a continuation and development of my first project and publication. I have expanded on my initial ideas to create a large platform for the Girls of the North in male dominated sports in the form of a printed and digital publication and an online platform. I have continued to look into skateboarding and football and also delve into basketball and rugby as well, sourcing individuals as well as sports teams. This project tackles larger issues such as motherhood, and covers global teams through interviews and photograph and includes contributions from females in other creative industries, for example print, graphics and illustration. Collaboration and commissioning is a much bigger component in this project. The following images are taken from my recent publication and online platform. Kinship Photography by Ella Kenneally Client Brief: Public Source, Then There Was Us Within the brief of Kindship I was drawn to themes of community, brotherhood, race, identity, class and family. I started exploring men who have been brought up around Gang Culture and their common means of escape. Football. I wanted to represent a minority and give a voice to those often overlooked in society so I focused on a small group of boys, who share the same narrative, from my hometown Hackney in London and explored what community and family means to them and the role football played in their lives to keep them out of trouble. I looked at the obsession with, and glamorisation of gang culture in the media and popular culture, always from assumed information, and how I could do the opposite. By showing them in a different light, I have aimed to reconstruct the identity given to them by society through my photography, interviews and overall portrayal of them. I wanted to hear from real people with real experiences and show them how they want to be seen and not how society wants them to be seen.

BA (Hons) Fashion Art Direction 2020

Hello! I’m Ella, a Photographer and Creative Director from Hackney, London.

Within my work I am usually drawn to themes of community, identity and women and I try to give a voice to those often overlooked in society. I love to tell stories with my photography and show diverse and authentic people through my portrayal of them; working with them to present them in a way they want to be seen and not a way society dictates. I believe this is something that is often overlooked in photography, rather than just working on what I want, I work with the people to present them in a way they’re proud of too. I try not to be objective and experience things together with them and let them express themselves in a way they feel comfortable.
